What is BioCity: Centre for Urban Habitats?

In May 2003, BioCity: Centre for Urban Habitats was awarded status as a University of Adelaide Research Centre. The Centre is hosted by the Discipline of Environmental Biology, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Adelaide.

BioCity has been established to further promote urban environmental awareness through environmental research, communication and education programmes. This will lead to the maintenance and enhancement of the biological integrity of urban habitats.

BioCity is a partnership between the leading ecological and environmental institutions in the State, including local and state governments, industry and the community.

BioCity utilises the best of a diverse range of disciplines from plant and animal science to engineering and architecture, in order to enrich the lives of the people of Adelaide through research, communication and education in urban environmental issues. This facilitates the creation of a rich, interesting and harmonious environment that is in keeping with the historical development and current cultural richness of our parks and gardens.

Mission Statement: To enhance Adelaide’s urban environment through multidisciplinary research, design and development that promotes native flora and fauna in the context of urban living.

New BioCity Book

Adelaide
Nature of a City
The Ecology of a Dynamic city from 1836 to 2036

This book is a compilation of 23 chapters dealing with 5 subjects:
1) the pre-European environment,
2) the changes to the plant, vertebrate and invertebrate assemblages from settlement through to today,
3) the structure of the local land, water and marine environments,
4) how urban land is used, and
5) the future of urban biodiversity.

Urban environments are complex, dynamic, rapidly changing systems controlled by man. Despite living in cities for more than 4,000 years, we know very little about how cities function as ecological entities. This book tracks the changes to the biological communities, to the plants and animals, and to the structure and nature of the built environment of the city of Adelaide from its inception in 1836 to the present day. Additionally, this book predicts Adelaide’s future through to 2036.

Adelaide: Nature of a City contains contributions by over 70 South Australian scientists, architects, engineers, town planners, agriculturalists, social scientists, geographers, historians and experts from other disciplines. The book describes and analyses the local environment and predicts the future in terms of species loss and gain, biodiversity change and community structure. The book also contains over 130 boxes which are vignettes on interesting aspects of the topics covered in the chapters, and a must read for anyone interested in biology, ecology, the environment, geography, architecture, landscape design, urban history and/or social science.

This book is aimed at readers over 15 years old, with an interest in the ecology of cities, and/or the biology of plants and animals, the form and function of the green components of the built environment, and the history of the development of a most remarkable city.

Adelaide is a model city reflecting changes that occur in most modern cities around the world. Its story, therefore, has parallels in many European, American and African cities. The book is easy to read and lavishly illustrated.
