Urban Habitat Management at the University Of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide is uniquely positioned to offer multidisciplinary postgraduate coursework programs in urban habitat management with an applied focus on the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in cities.  The University’s existing strong research and teaching interests in urban habitat management have been enhanced by its association with BioCity: the Centre for Urban Habitats.  This association has linked three of the University’s disciplines (Environmental Biology, Environmental Studies and Landscape Architecture) with a diverse range of research institutions, state and local government agencies, businesses/industries and community groups.  The establishment of these linkages has created an opportunity to provide an educational experience unrivalled in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region by involving the BioCity partners in the delivery of urban habitat management postgraduate coursework programs under the academic direction of the University. 

PROGRAM AIMS
to conserve and restore the biodiversity of cities by promoting best practice management of urban habitats through research, learning and teaching conducted in collaboration with government, business/industry and community organizations committed to enhancing the quality of urban living.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
· to provide courses that incorporate the results of current research on urban habitats and best practice applications of this research to government, business/industry and community efforts to design and manage sustainable urban habitats;
· to provide an opportunity for Graduate Diploma and Masters candidates to obtain relevant work experience by participating as interns in existing urban habitat management projects;
· to promote the completion by Masters candidates of high quality applied research projects and dissertations in urban habitat management;
· to produce graduates who will be able to make significant contributions to the enhancing the quality of urban life through their employment in the field of urban habitat management and their community activities as environmentally aware and concerned citizens.

TEACHING METHODS
Participants in the programs are offered innovative and high quality courses where University of Adelaide staff play a co-ordinating role and provide introductory and bridging lectures, but where the main content of the courses is seminars, workshops and field activities conducted by BioCity partners to demonstrate their urban habitat management problems and solutions. 

Graduate Diploma an d Masters students are also be able to participate in existing urban habitat management projects through internship arrangements with BioCity partners, while Masters students can expect their dissertation research to attract sponsorship and co-supervision by BioCity partners.  The involvement of BioCity partners in the delivery of the programs is particularly beneficial to overseas students as it provides them with ‘real world’ practice in communication, research and management skills transferable to their home countries.

Professional Certificate in Urban Habitat Management
Elective Course(6 units)
Duration: one semester part-time.

Graduate Certificate in Urban Habitat Management

Duration: one semester full-time or not more than one year part-time.

Graduate Diploma in Urban Habitat Management

Internship Course
Internship in Urban Habitat Management. 
This course is offered in Semester I, Semester II and the Summer Semester to allow a mid-year intake of students and to facilitate part-time study.  Participants are placed with BioCity partners to obtain work experience by participating in existing urban habitat management projects.

Dissertation Course
Urban Habitat Management Research and Dissertation F/T
Urban Habitat Management Research and Dissertation P/T.
A research project and dissertation of 15 000 to 20 000 words.  Students commence the research and dissertation component of the Masters program after completing the coursework component.  Most research projects are sponsored and by BioCity partners.

ELIGIBILITY
The requirement for admission to the academic program for the Professional Certificate, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Urban Habitat Management is normally an Ordinary degree of the University of Adelaide in a field of study relevant to urban habitat management (e.g., Environmental Biology, Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture) or a degree of another institution in an appropriate field of study which is equivalent to an Ordinary degree of the University. 

The requirement for admission to the academic program for the Master of Urban Habitat Management degree is normally an Honours degree of the University of Adelaide in a field of study relevant to urban habitat management (e.g., Environmental Biology, Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture) or a degree of another institution in an appropriate field of study which is equivalent to an Honours degree of the University.  Applicants who have completed the Graduate Diploma in Urban Habitat Management at an average Credit level or higher and have relevant professional experience equivalent to at least 12 units of tertiary study can normally obtain the Masters degree by completing the Urban Habitat Management Research and Dissertation course.
